Corsica is an island, and this geographical fact is also its first promise. To reach it, one must leave the mainland, cross the sea, and this crossing already forms part of the journey. Whether arriving by air, with the Corsican coast revealing itself suddenly through the window, or by sea, with the cliffs of Bonifacio surging from the mist, the first contact with the Isle of Beauty is always a moment of grace.

Reaching Porto-Vecchio and South Corsica is simpler than one might imagine. Figari airport, just twenty-five minutes' drive from Villa Azaitu, serves numerous French and European cities. Ferries provide regular crossings from several Mediterranean ports. Here is a comprehensive guide to organising your arrival with complete peace of mind.

Reaching Corsica by air

Flying is the quickest way to reach South Corsica. Figari Sud-Corse airport, situated twenty-five minutes' drive from Porto-Vecchio and Villa Azaitu, is the ideal point of entry. Small, efficient and pleasant, it spares you the endless queues of major airport hubs.

From Paris, the flight takes approximately one hour forty minutes. Air France, Air Corsica and several low-cost carriers operate daily services in high season. From Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Nantes, Bordeaux or Lille, direct flights reach Figari in one to two hours. In summer, seasonal routes open from numerous European cities: London, Brussels, Geneva and others.

Ajaccio airport offers an alternative for those who cannot find a direct flight to Figari. Larger, it provides more connections, but the drive to Porto-Vecchio takes around two and a half hours crossing the island through the mountains. This journey, though longer, offers spectacular scenery well worth the detour: mountain passes, laricio pine forests and plunging views over the Mediterranean.

For international travellers, Bastia also has connections, notably with Italy. Allow three hours' drive to reach Porto-Vecchio from Bastia, following the eastern coast.

The ferry: arriving by sea

The ferry offers a radically different travel experience. There is something fundamentally romantic about the idea of reaching an island by sea, watching the mainland slowly fade on the horizon while Corsica appears, first as a bluish shadow, then as an increasingly precise mountainous mass.

From Marseille, the crossing to Porto-Vecchio or Propriano takes between six and eleven hours depending on the company and type of vessel. Overnight departures allow you to sleep on board and arrive at dawn, fresh and rested, ready to enjoy the first day. Corsica Linea and La Méridionale operate these routes with modern, comfortable ships.

From Nice, crossings to Bastia or Ajaccio are shorter, roughly five to six hours. Corsica Ferries also offers frequent and competitive services. From Toulon, the duration varies between six and nine hours depending on the island destination.

For travellers coming from Italy, regular services run from Livorno, Genoa and Savona to Bastia. The Livorno crossing, the shortest, takes only around four hours, making it a practical option for those combining a Tuscan stay with a Corsican escape.

The ferry holds one considerable advantage: the ability to bring your own vehicle. For a villa stay where you wish to explore the region freely, arriving with your car eliminates the need for a hire and offers total freedom from the moment you disembark.

Car hire

For those arriving by air, hiring a car is highly recommended. South Corsica is ideally discovered at your own pace, taking the small roads that wind between beaches, villages and mountains. Public transport, though it exists, remains limited and poorly suited to a holiday of exploration.

All major hire agencies are represented at Figari airport. Booking well in advance is strongly advised, especially in July and August, when demand far exceeds supply. A mid-range vehicle suffices for most routes, though a slightly more powerful model will make the mountain roads more enjoyable.

Parking at Villa Azaitu is easy, with a private car park comfortably accommodating several vehicles. In Porto-Vecchio, parking in high season requires a little patience, but well-situated paid car parks facilitate access to the town centre and the citadel.

From the airport to the villa

The journey between Figari airport and Villa Azaitu is reassuringly simple. Twenty-five minutes' drive along the T40, a well-maintained and signposted road that crosses a landscape of maquis and hills before descending towards the Palombaggia coastline.

For guests who prefer not to drive after travelling, our concierge service arranges private transfers from the airport. A driver awaits you at the terminal exit, takes charge of your luggage and drives you directly to the villa. It is the most serene way to begin your stay, especially after an evening flight.

Transfers can also be arranged from Ajaccio airport or the Porto-Vecchio ferry port. Every logistical detail is taken care of so that your arrival is as smooth as possible.

When to book your tickets

The golden rule is simple: the earlier, the better. For flights to Figari in high season, the best fares are obtained three to four months in advance. Departure and return weekends (Friday evening, Sunday evening) are the most sought-after; shifting by a day often yields substantial savings.

For ferries, advance booking is even more crucial, especially if you are bringing a vehicle. Overnight crossings from Marseille are snapped up from spring onwards for the months of July and August. Booking in January or February guarantees the best choice of times and cabins.

The most pleasant periods for visiting South Corsica remain May, June and September. Prices are gentler, the beaches less crowded, and the light is particularly beautiful. The water temperature, already pleasant in June, reaches its optimum in September, when the sea has accumulated all the summer's warmth.

Whatever period you choose, arriving in South Corsica is always a moment of emotion. The air smells of maquis the moment you step off the plane, the light is different, warmer, more golden, and the villa awaits, serene, with its terrace open to the infinite blue of the Mediterranean.
